Photo safari Svalbard
Wildlife expedition into the pack ice
This is a unique opportunity to venture deep into the pack ice thanks to our brand-new expedition ship: MS Kvitungen Thanks to her extremely high DNV ICE 5 ice class, we can take you further than ever before. At this time of year, large areas remain covered with drift ice, and some of the more remote parts of the archipelago are within reach. Join us as we search for polar bears, walruses, whales, seals and diverse birdlife in the ever-changing Svalbard scenery and pack-ice.

With the new Svalbard regulations in place, it is now more important than ever to be able to safely visit the pack-ice out in international waters. The knowledge and experience of the team at Arctic Wildlife Tours combined with the superior capabilities of our new vessel will give you the best chances of unforgettable encounters with Polar Bears. Out in the pack-ice, our stationary ship will be the ideal platform for us to wait for wildlife to come closer. It is not unusual for bears and other wildlife to come and inspect the ship! In addition to polar bears, we expect to see a range of other species including Bowhead Whales, Blue Whales, Seals and a great range of birds like the iconic Ivory Gull.
Exclusive small ship expedition.
Wildlife photography is at our core and our team are experts at maximising opportunities, but our expeditions are well suited for anyone interested in wildlife experiences in general. Join this exclusive small ship charter as we make our way through the Svalbard wilderness and icy waters of the High Arctic. No matter the ice thickness, swell or wind, the strength of our new vessel allows us to be much more flexible with our itinerary, from sailing the fjords to heading straight up towards the drift ice.
What to expect.
This time of year, we expect to see all the different wildlife around Svalbard. We expect to spend 3-4 days of the trip in the drift ice to look for polar bears.
The beautiful landscapes and dramatic scenery will also give you outstanding photographic opportunities. If you want to learn more about the trip or discuss any specific requirements, please do not hesitate to contact us at contact@arcticwildlifetours.com
Looking forward to welcoming you onboard.

Itinerary
Because Svalbard is well above the Arctic circle, at about 80 degrees North, our itinerary is always built around prevailing weather and ice conditions. On the map, we have plotted our planned route for the expedition, and whilst it is always subject to changes, this should give you an idea of the main areas we will visit. In early June the drift ice edge can still be found as low as the Svalbard islands. This is a great place to look for wildlife, weather and ice conditions permitting.
Day 0 We always recommend arriving in Longyearbyen at least one day and night in advance. Missed connecting flights, lost luggage and other unwelcome surprises are rare but not impossible! There is plenty to see in Longyearbyen and we will gladly give you some recommendations.
Day 1 Departure from Longyearbyen, sailing across Isfjorden. Upon reaching open water, the weather and ice conditions will determine whether we sail Northeast or Southeast. In both cases we will sail through wildlife rich areas.
Day 2-9 Looking for wildlife in accessible areas around the Svalbard islands. June is still early in the season, with some of the more remote areas potentially out of our reach. This of course varies year on year and depending on the weather and ice, we will do our best to reach the Seven Islands and spend some time up in the drifting ice. We will look for wildlife including polar bears, seals, whales, and a large variety of birdlife. We will also plan stops near Walrus haul outs areas as well.
The route illustrated in the map on this page is an estimate for where we will sail.
Day 10
Disembark after breakfast and prepare the travel home.
