Drift Ice extreme safari Svalbard
A new concept and a new era on Svalbard
With the new Svalbard regulations in place within the territorial border, it is now more important than ever to be able to safely visit the pack-ice out in international waters. Thanks to our brand new ship MS Kvitungen, we have the capacity to venture deeper and longer into the pack ice.
Photo safari Svalbard.
Wildlife is incredibly diverse in Svalbard, but the most famous inhabitant is of course the Polar Bear; the true “King of the Arctic”. Polar bears roam the frozen seas and rugged coastlines, searching for seals and sustenance. When they are not on the hunt, you can sometimes see them tending to their small cubs in this harsh, yet rich environment. It is not unusual to see bears wandering along the shore, but their real kingdom is out in the drifting pack ice, where we want to take you.
Exclusive small ship expedition.
A short distance North or East of The Svalbard Archipelago, out in the Arctic Ocean, begins a magical place that we call “the pack ice”. It is the real kingdom of polar bears, where they can hunt seals in the summer when all the fjord ice has melted away. Our new ship MS Kvitungen is classed with an “ICE 5” certificate, which is only found on some of the, much, much, larger “expedition” cruise ships. This means that we will be able to spend more time out in the ice, and go further into the icefield, than any other ship in her category. Traveling deep into the pack ice is an adventure on its own, but it also greatly increases our chances of seeing wildlife.
What to expect.
This time of year, we expect to see all the different wildlife around Svalbard. The ever-changing landscapes and dramatic scenery will also give you outstanding photographic opportunities. Last but not least, we will spend substantial time in the pack-ice, leveraging the unique abilities of our new ship. Looking forward to welcoming you onboard.

Itinerary
Svalbard is situated at about 80 degrees north, so we schedule the expedition in accordance with prevailing weather and ice conditions. The map on this page shows the estimated route for this expedition. Even if it normally will be some changes in the planned itinerary this route cover the main areas we will visit. In July the drift ice edge can be situated near the Svalbard islands still. Onboard our expedition vessel MS Kvitungen will we be able to explore bigger parts of the drift ice. It's a good place searching for wildlife. Weather and ice conditions will be what we plan the sailing rout according to, along with where to find wildlife.
Day 0 We always recommend to arrive Longyearbyen at least one day and night in advance.
Day 1 Departure from Longyearbyen throughout Isfjorden. Dependent on weather and ice conditions we sail towards Northeast or Southeast. Any direction will bring us into interesting areas for finding wildlife.
Day 2-10 Looking for wildlife in accessible areas around the Svalbard islands. It's still early season in June and some of the most remote areas can still not be accessible. This will vary from season too season. We will try to reach the Seven Islands and up in the drifting ice. Depending on the ice conditions and weather we will choose the route for this Svalbard photo expedition. We will look for wildlife like polar bears, seals, whales and also some birdlife this time of the year. We will plan stops visiting Walrus haul outs as well.
The route illustrated in the map on this page is just a estimate for where we will sail. It probably will be changed depending on the ice conditions.
Day 11 Leaving the ship after breakfast and prepare the travel home.
