Svalbard Winter photography expedition

Svalbard Winter photography expedition March 28 - April 04 2025

Winter photography adventure

We are doing a very early Svalbard winter photography expedition on Svalbard in 2025 and welcome you to join us. Expect it to be cold but you will be able to enjoy the great light the winter on Svalbard can offer.

Amazing light.

It is daylight almost 24 hours a day but the light will be pink, violet, bluish and red, depending on the time of the day or the night. It's almost impossible to explain how March on Svalbard look like. It's the time of the year when you really feel how beautiful and pristine the Arctic nature can be. Svalbard winter photography tours is some of the most amazing trips you can do in the High Arctic.

Weather and ice.

Nature in the High Arctic constantly changes. On Svalbard, every day is different, and every season is different. Arctic Wildlife Tours guides leads this expedition to Svalbard, a remote area we know and love. The weather situation and the ice conditions is always important factors for any expedition we do and on this trip we hope we will have some of the best conditions. Where we go during this winter photography expedition and what we will do is depending on these factors; weather and the ice. We also use our knowledge about wildlife for deciding what parts of Svalbard we will visit. Some remote areas are not accessible this early in the season due to frozen fjords and oceans.

Wildlife photography.

We will try to experience wildlife encounters in picture-perfect icy conditions on this Svalbard winter photography expedition. The light and landscapes with the wildlife in it will be our main goal. We also expect some close encounters with wildlife. We will try to do a few landings for Walrus photography. Most of the time we will photograph from the ships. We will also launch the zodiacs and do cruises by the ice floes and also do a few landings. This is an exclusive tour with maximum 12 guests onboard the MV Kinfish.

Arctic Fox photography prior to the expedition.

We also invite you for a couple of days prior to the trip to photograph Arctic Foxes nearby Longyearbyen(Accommodation in Longyearbyen not included in the price) If you are interested please ask us. This will be done by car nearby Longyearbyen and we expect to have some nice situations with Arctic Foxes. Arctic Foxes are one of the most interesting species during a Svalbard winter photography tour with their totally white fur. Wondering what to expect? Please get in touch for more information and to talk about what you can expect on email: contact@arcticwildlifetours.com

Practical information

Estimated travel route during this photo tour

Itinerary

This Svalbard winter photography tour and itinerary will be planned in accordance with prevailing weather and ice conditions. The ice is still solid frozen in winter and we will adapt to these conditions. The sailing route will be along the west coast of Spitzbergen down south to Hornsund and as far north as possible.

Day 0 We always recommend to arrive Longyearbyen at least one day and night in advance.

Day 1 Departure from Longyearbyen throughout Isfjorden. Heading north or south, depending on the drift ice situation, into the drifting ice. We also search in the fjords we find interesting.

Day 1-7 We set course for the areas where we know we will meet the drift ice. No matter if we sail north or south this will be the focus. Some of the fjords and islands will be interesting to visit and we will search systematically for wildlife wherever we go. The fjords will still be frozen in this time of the year and we will see wildlife in these areas.

The route is just a estimate for where we can sail. This can, and probably will, be changed as we know this from our earlier expeditions.

Day 8 Leaving the ship after breakfast and prepare the travel home.
