Brown Bear photography tour July 8 - 14 2020

Professional guided tour

Workshop in the forests of Finland.

Join an exclusive guided tour to the natural habitat of Brown Bears in the forests of Finland. We will guide you to the best positions from where you can capture stunning photographs of these magnificent creatures.

As we have spent around 200 nights in the photo hides at the Viiksimo and Martinselkoonen camps, we know where to find the best spots. Around our preferred hides, you can expect a variety of young pine and spruce forests, old growth forests, swamps and a pond. The animals will approach our hides at very close range, sometimes as little as five metres.

From a photography perspective, we will focus on setting up remote-controlled cameras and using wide-angle photography as the bears get up close and personal. This is something we have worked on several times before so we know it gives the possibility for truly unique images.

During the daytime we will hold lectures and slideshows from other tours in Finland and expeditions into the high Arctic. You’ll also have plenty of time for hands-on help with your photography from professional wildlife photographer Svein Wik.

Total price pr. person:    NOK   20 000

Inclusive: Professional guiding for the best hides, light and pictures.
All meals during the workshop. Accommodation. Coffee and tea. Two lectures about wildlife photography. Use of remote controlled equipment for wide angle pictures.

Group size 6-8 persons:
We keep the group small to give the best possible guidance. Minimum 6 participants.

What you can expect!

The photographic opportunities will be the best possible in this area. We are experienced in this and know which hides that will be the best to use according to the light situations, surroundings and where the bears roam. It will sometimes give you close encounters to Brown Bears and a really spectacular experience together with the photographic possibilities.
We will use some set-ups for remote controlled cameras. All participants that want to try will be guided in this kind of photography. We are dealing with bears and all use of private experience will be on your own risk in case of damaged equipment. The risk is small. We have tried this many times before. We also protect the cameras in hard case boxes before we put them out.
During the days we need some sleep and rest. We will also arrange some social happenings and rund a couple of slideshow from our Svalbard expeditions and other carnivore travels.

Photographic equipment

You will need a wide range of lenses to cover all possibilities for pictures. We recommend lenses ranging from 70-200mm to 5-600mm lenses.  Mostly lenses between 200mm and 500mm will be the most useable ranges. Wide angles will be possible to use sometimes, in remote controlled set-ups, or even from the hides.
Its an advantage to bring at least two camera bodies. You will have at least two openings each in the hides we use to photograph through.

Travel Route

The camps we will be accommodated at are situated 2,5 hours driving by car from nearest airport Kajaani. Kajaani Airport is 1 hour flight from the capitol in Finland, Helsinki.

The hides we will use are close to the camps and we will be transported out every afternoon and picked up in early morning again.
