Arctic fox photography and encounters

Arctic Fox photography is something we regularly have the chance to do during our expeditions, depending oin the time of the year and conditions. We always scout for them and regularly we do have them close to us.

In winter the Arctic fox is totally white, only a few exceptions in a different morph, named “blue fox”. In summer the “blue fox” still is blue, while the regular Arctic fox will be gray. Arctic fox photography is something we get to do regularly on our expeditions. It depends on the time of the year and where we go but arctic foxes are around everywhere on Svalbard.

The Arctic fox has a short snout, short rounded ears and a body size smaller than its close relative the red fox (that does not exist in Svalbard). It is about 60 cm long and has a tail that is approximately 30 cm long in addition. Arctic foxes weigh 2.5–5 kg. They moult twice each year.

The winter fur is thick with dense under-fur and long guard hairs. The shedding of the winter fur starts in May and the short summer fur is in place in July. In September the winter fur starts growing, and by November-December the winter coat is complete.

Svalbard winter photography

26. Mar 2027 - 03. Apr 2027
Svalbard winter photography expedition offers some of the most spectacular scenery imaginable. The dramatic landscape, composed of towering mountains, deep fjords, sweeping valleys, and the vast expanse of the Arctic Ocean, makes this region an extraordinary destination for exploration and photography. At this time of year, the landscapes themselves are the primary focus, though wildlife is never far from sight. The dramatic setting is enhanced by the presence of polar bears, which can often be seen traversing the scenic terrain or drifting across ice floes. These encounters provide breathtaking photographic opportunities in the heart of the Arctic wilderness.

Arctic Winter Photography by Snowmobile

17. Apr 2027 - 21. Apr 2027
An Arctic winter photography expedition by snowmobile on Svalbard offers a rare opportunity to experience the High Arctic at its most beautiful and stunning time of the year. We will travel by snowmobile through stark, frozen landscapes shaped by snow, ice, and polar light. We will experience the atmosphere of the true Arctic, with cold days and nights. Our base will be a winter camp, where heated tents provide shelter after long days in the field. Reindeer hides, warm sleeping bags, and stove-heated tents will make resting time comfortable despite the Arctic conditions. These elements make the expedition both a memorable adventure and a powerful photographic experience.

Early Pack Ice photography expedition

17. May 2027 - 25. May 2027
Early Pack Ice expedition Svalbard will take you into heavy drift ice in the southern parts of Svalbard. Our vessel is able to handle the heavy ice down there at this time of the year. We will take you into the pack ice south of Northeast land on this expedition. These areas are known for rich wildlife habitats. Even though the nights can remain very cold, it is possible to observe wildlife resting and hunting in the pack ice and on the ice-covered fjords. In this bright, winter-like environment, participants can enjoy remarkable wildlife encounters in truly picturesque, icy conditions by joining our Spring Pack Ice expedition. In the pack ice we are outside the Svalbard territorial borders and Polar Bears can be photographed if they approach our ship.

Pack Ice Expedition South Svalbard

20. Jun 2027 - 29. Jun 2027
As an Svalbard Tour Operator, Arctic Wildlife Tours have long experience. This time we are inviting you to join us to explore a new area on Svalbard. From back in time the southeastern parts of Svalbard have been considered the best areas for encountering polar bears and other wildlife. From our experience we agree. The challenge there have been heavy ice and very few expedition vessel want to go there. Our new high ice class vessel Kvitungen puts us in a different situation. Kvitungen has the ice capacity to navigate these very interesting areas and this expedition is made possible by the ice-strengthened vessel Kvitungen. We believe it will be great opportunities for wildlife during this expedition.

Svalbard September Pack Ice Expedition

21. Sep 2027 - 30. Sep 2027
Join us for an unforgettable expedition to Svalbard aboard the ice-strengthened M/S Kvitungen, a vessel designed to navigate Arctic waters with confidence. In our opinion, late September is a fantastic time to experience the archipelago and its wildlife. Sunrises and sunsets can create dramatic light across the mountains, fjords, and ice. Changing weather, fresh snow, and the approach of winter add even more atmosphere to the landscape. The ice-strengthened vessel can navigate the pack ice even in late September. However, we will remain alert to freezing nights, when ice conditions can change quickly and the pack ice may begin to close around the vessel.
