Pack Ice Expedition South Svalbard

Pack Ice expedition South Svalbard June 20- 29 2027

Photography Expedition in South-East Svalbard

Set out on an unforgettable expedition into one of Svalbard’s less-travelled regions, where vast pack ice, fjords and dramatic Arctic coastlines create the setting for a truly distinctive journey. Few vessels are willing or able to enter these ice-heavy areas early in the season, making this voyage a rare opportunity to explore places that remain out of reach for most travellers.

Route and Conditions

Our route begins with a course south toward the renowned fjord system of Hornsund. From there, we sail around the southernmost point of Spitsbergen, South Cape, before heading east into Storfjorden. Depending on seasonal ice, weather, and local conditions, we will explore this region and also continue farther east into even more remote waters.

Experience the Exceptional Kvitungen

Throughout the expedition, you will travel aboard Kvitungen, a remarkable refurbished vessel originally built for seal hunting. With an ice class rating of 1A1 SEALER, Kvitungen is uniquely suited to navigating and manoeuvring through challenging ice conditions.

Today, Kvitungen operates as a capable expedition vessel, offering access to remote Arctic locations that few small vessels in Svalbard can reach. She is operated by a Norwegian captain and supported by an experienced Norwegian crew with extensive knowledge of the Arctic Ocean, helping ensure safe, reliable navigation throughout the journey.

A Photography Expedition in South-East Svalbard

Travel along Svalbard’s rugged coastline as we search for Arctic wildlife and photograph the striking landscapes that define this remote part of the world. The expedition is designed to maximise time in the field, combining wildlife observation with opportunities to capture fjords, ice, mountains, and shifting polar light.

  • Search for wildlife including Arctic foxes, walruses, polar bears, and other remarkable species.
  • Photograph dramatic coastlines, fjords, sea ice, and Arctic wilderness.
  • Explore areas shaped by seasonal ice and rapidly changing weather conditions.

An Exclusive Small-Ship Expedition

Our Svalbard photography adventures are enhanced by travelling aboard a small vessel with a select group of just 12 passengers. This makes the experience more personal, flexible, and intimate, while allowing the guide team to focus closely on photographic opportunities and wildlife encounters.

On this expedition, we deliberately work with the challenges of ice and weather in pursuit of something exceptional. Kvitungen plays a central role in making this possible, giving us the capability to reach places where conditions are demanding but the rewards can be extraordinary.

What to Expect

During this season, we expect to encounter a wide variety of Arctic wildlife throughout Svalbard. The itinerary includes three to four days among drifting pack ice, with a particular focus on polar bears and other animals that inhabit this ice-covered wilderness.

In response to strong client interest, this expedition dedicates additional time to the pack ice, offering a deeper experience of one of the Arctic’s most powerful and memorable environments.

The trip also offers exceptional opportunities to photograph spectacular landscapes and dramatic scenery. For further information or to discuss any specific requirements, please feel free to contact us at contact@arcticwildlifetours.com

Travel Route Svalbard photo expedition

Itinerary

Explore the remote south-eastern regions of Svalbard aboard Kvitungen, a high ice-class expedition vessel well suited to early-season conditions. At this time of year, heavy pack ice and remnants of fjord ice often remain, creating excellent opportunities for wildlife encounters and dramatic Arctic scenery. We also plan selected shore landings where conditions allow. As always in Svalbard, the itinerary may change according to ice, weather, and safety considerations.

Day 0: Arrival in Longyearbyen

We strongly recommend arriving in Longyearbyen at least one day before embarkation. This gives you time to acclimatise, settle in, and reduce the risk of travel delays affecting the start of your expedition.

Day 1: Departure from Longyearbyen

On the first day, we depart from Longyearbyen and sail through Isfjorden before setting a course south. Weather and sea conditions permitting, our first major area of interest may be the beautiful fjords of Hornsund. From there, we continue around South Cape, the southernmost point of Spitsbergen, before entering Storfjorden.

Day 2: Entering Eastern Svalbard

Storfjorden lies between Spitsbergen, Edgeøya, and Barentsøya. In early season, this vast fjord can be especially rewarding when drifting ice is still present. Several landing sites may also be of interest, depending on local conditions.

By late June, ice can vary significantly in this region. Even if Storfjorden is relatively open, the northern areas remain highly attractive, especially around the wild glacier front of Negribreen. After exploring Storfjorden, we aim to sail through Heleysundet and continue into some of the most compelling areas for this time of year, including Nordaustlandet, Kongsøya, and the eastern parts of Spitsbergen, Edgeøya, and Barentsøya.

Day 2–9: Exploring Svalbard and the Pack Ice

In June, extensive pack ice and remnants of fjord ice may still be present across the eastern areas of Svalbard. From Heleysundet, we plan to continue eastward in search of wildlife among the pack ice. When conditions allow, parts of the route may take us beyond the 12-nautical-mile zone, where we can observe polar bears in the ice at appropriate distances and with minimal disturbance.

Historically, these eastern areas have been regarded as some of the best regions for polar bear encounters. The itinerary also includes visits to several Svalbard fjords, giving us opportunities to observe and photograph a wide range of Arctic wildlife.

  • Search for polar bears, seals, whales, walruses, and seasonal Arctic birdlife.
  • Visit walrus haul-out sites on selected islands and within fjord systems, where conditions permit.
  • Photograph pack ice, glacier fronts, remote coastlines, and wildlife-rich habitats.
  • Adapt daily plans to make the most of changing ice, weather, and wildlife opportunities.

Estimated Route and Expedition Flexibility

The route shown on the map should be understood as an estimate only. Ice conditions in Svalbard can change quickly, and we will adjust the itinerary as needed to ensure a safe, rewarding expedition. If ice conditions in the south-eastern areas are unfavourable, we may instead sail north to enter the pack ice there.

Day 10: Departure from the Ship

On the final day, guests will leave the ship after breakfast and prepare for their journey home.
