Spring Pack Ice photography expedition

Spring Pack Ice Expedition Svalbard May 17 - 25 2027

Exploring the ice

Welcome to one of our Svalbard tours in the early season. Spring in Svalbard is a truly unique time of year, characterized by bright skies while the landscape remains blanketed in snow and ice. During this period, Svalbard start to undergo rapid transformations. As the pack ice and fjord ice melt, the wildlife is compelled to follow these changes. In response, our expeditions will also track these shifts, exploring areas of the ice that are remote from settlements and other people.

The Pack Ice and the Fjords

By May, the region already experiences the constant daylight of the midnight sun. While clouds may lessen the intensity of the sunlight, they also create a variety of patterns and possibilities for photography. Still we will see some of the coolers from sunsets and sunrises. Even though the nights can remain very cold, it is possible to observe wildlife resting and hunting in the pack ice and on ice-covered fjords. The wildlife migrates with the ice. Our focus on this expedition is to explore the pack ice and follow the wildlife out into those vast areas of ice.

Exploring Remote Areas of Svalbard

Nature in the High Arctic is ever-changing. In Svalbard, the days are not the same and constantly changing, and each year brings new experiences. By using our strong ice class vessel Kvitungen this year we are able to challenge the limits of the ice more than any season before. We will follow the wildlife out into the heavy pack ice and explore their behaviour close to the ship. Depending on the year and the amount of ice we will plan to explore some of the more remote areas in the Arctic ocean around Svalbard. Arctic Wildlife Tours, a Norwegian-owned company, leads this expedition in a remote area that we know and cherish. This level of expertise is crucial in a region where guides must adapt to constantly changing weather, drifting ice, and wildlife movements at all hours of the day.

Accommodation and Expedition Ship

Our expedition takes place aboard Kvitungen, a vessel built for navbigating in heavy ice and polar exploration. The ship is refurbished with new cabins, mess room and a small lounge for the season of 2027. The vessel was originally built for seal hunting purpose in 1960 and has the strongest possible ice class on a small vessel, ice class SEALER. The guides who lead these tours, together with the experienced crew, all speak excellent English and have extensive experience in exploring Svalbard.

Please contact us for more information or to discuss what you can expect from this extraordinary journey.

Practical information

Estimated travel route during this photo tour

Itinerary

This photo tour and itinerary will be planned in accordance with prevailing weather and ice conditions. In May it will still be lot of fjord ice and the pack ice will be easy to reach almost in any direction. This limits the areas that is accessible, on the other hand the conditions with snow covered and frozen landscapes will be great experiences this time of the year.

Day 0 We always recommend to arrive Longyearbyen at least one day and night in advance.

Day 1 Departure from Longyearbyen through Isfjorden. Heading north or south, depending on the drift ice situation, into the drifting ice. We will on future trips spend more time in the drifting ice. We also search in the fjords, which will still be frozen and give great opportunities for seeing wildlife. The normal route is to go north into the pack ice, with our new vessel Kvitungen we might as well choose going down south and towards east into the ice. This is rarely visitied areas due to heavy ice this time of the year.

Day 1-8 We set course for the areas where we know we will meet the drift ice. No matter if we sail north or south this will be the focus. Some of the fjords and islands will be interesting to visit and we will search systematically for wildlife wherever we go. The fjords will still be frozen in this time of the year.

The route is just a estimate for where we can sail. This can, and probably will, be changed as we know this from our earlier expeditions.

Day 9 Leaving the ship after breakfast and prepare the travel home.
