Svalbard July Pack Ice Expedition
Arctic Ocean Photography Expedition
Join us for an extraordinary 13-day adventure as we set out to explore the majestic fjords of Svalbard and traverse the vast expanse of pack ice. This single, thrilling expedition promises a journey through breathtaking landscapes and pristine wilderness. During our voyage, we will keep a keen eye out for remarkable wildlife. The region is home to seals, whales, and a diverse array of bird species. Of particular note is the iconic polar bear, which we hope to observe especially while navigating the pack ice.
Experience the Exceptional Kvitungen
During your expedition, you will spend time aboard the remarkable and refurbished vessel, Kvitungen. Originally constructed for seal hunting, this ship boasts an impressive ice class rating of SEALER. Today, Kvitungen serves as a state-of-the-art expedition vessel, uniquely capable of navigating and maneuvering through heavy ice conditions. No other small vessel operating in Svalbard matches its ability to access remote locations despite challenging ice.
The vessel is operated by a Norwegian captain, supported by experienced Norwegian crew members who bring invaluable knowledge from working in the Arctic Ocean. Their expertise ensures safe and reliable navigation throughout your journey, allowing you to reach extraordinary and seldom-visited destinations in the Arctic ocean around Svalbard.
Svalbard Photography Expedition
Travel along the rugged coastlines of Svalbard, where we will search for fascinating wildlife such as arctic foxes, walruses, and polar bears among the fjords, alongside many other remarkable species. In addition to wildlife viewing, we will have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in and photograph the breathtaking landscapes that make Svalbard so unique.
Exclusive Small Ship Expedition
Our Svalbard photography adventures are enhanced by travelling aboard a smaller vessel, accompanied by a select group of just 12 passengers. This exclusivity ensures a more personalised and intimate experience. Our expert guide team is dedicated to maximising photographic opportunities, making our expeditions ideal for both avid photographers and anyone interested in unique wildlife encounters. Join us for this special small ship charter as we journey through the pristine wilderness and icy waters of the High Arctic.

Itinerary
Svalbard is located approximately 80 degrees north, and the timing of our expedition is carefully coordinated with the prevailing weather and ice conditions. The map provided on this page gives an estimated route for our journey; while there may be some changes to the planned itinerary, this route encompasses the main regions we intend to visit. In July, the drift ice edge often lies near the Svalbard islands, influencing our plans for sailing. Our navigation is determined by current weather and ice conditions, as well as the optimal areas for observing wildlife.
Day 0: Arrival in Longyearbyen
We strongly recommend arriving in Longyearbyen at least one day and night prior to the expedition’s start. This allows time to acclimate and ensures a smooth beginning to the journey.
Day 1: Departure
On the first day, we depart from Longyearbyen, sailing through Isfjorden. Depending on the weather and ice, we will head either northeast or southeast. Both directions offer exciting opportunities to discover wildlife, as we make our way towards the northern regions of Svalbard.
Days 2-12: Exploring Svalbard and the pack ice
During July, extensive pack ice and remnants of fjord ice are still present. Our course will take us northward, approaching the drifting ice and gradually turning east. The itinerary includes visits to several Svalbard fjords, providing the chance to encounter much of the region’s diverse wildlife. In the pack ice we will be on the lookout for polar bears, seals, whales, and various bird species typical for this season. Along the coast lines of Svalbard we plan stops include visits to Walrus haul-out sites on some islands and within the fjords.
Estimated Route and Flexibility
The route illustrated on the map serves as an estimate for our journey. Adjustments are likely, as ice conditions can change rapidly and require flexibility in our plans.
Day 13: Departure from the Ship
On the final day, guests will leave the ship after breakfast and prepare for their journey home.
