Expedition into the Pack Ice North of Svalbard
We invite you to join us on an extraordinary expedition into the pack ice north of Svalbard. During this trip, we will venture deeper into the pack ice and extend our stay in these remote Arctic regions. Due to new environmental regulations introduced in 2025, some activities within the Svalbard territorial border has become more restricted. However, by journeying into the drift ice beyond these borders, we operate under international regulations, allowing for longer and more extensive exploration. Our vessel is specifically equipped to navigate and remain in the pack ice areas for extended periods. Additionally, the itinerary for this pack ice expedition Svalbard includes visits to majestic glaciers and scenic fjords, making this 14-night, 15-day cruise a truly immersive Arctic experience.
Wildlife of Svalbard
Svalbard is renowned for its rich diversity of Arctic wildlife. The most iconic resident is the polar bear, often referred to as "The King of the Arctic." These magnificent creatures traverse the frozen seas and rugged coastlines in search of seals and sustenance. It is not uncommon to witness polar bears caring for their cubs in this challenging yet thriving environment. While they may occasionally be spotted along the shores, the drifting pack ice is their true habitat. Remarkably, over 60% of the polar bear population migrates into the pack ice during early summer, making this region vital for their survival. This is one of the reasons why we do this pack ice expedition Svalbard.
Exclusive Small Ship Expedition
The Svalbard Archipelago is encircled by the Arctic Ocean, and by traveling just a short distance north or east of the islands, we enter the enchanting realm of the pack ice. This unique environment is not only the home of polar bears but also supports other wildlife such as seals, walruses, and whales. The summer season in the pack ice provides optimal conditions for polar bears to hunt seals, further highlighting the ecological importance of this area.
What to Expect
During this expedition, we anticipate encountering a wide variety of wildlife native to Svalbard also on the islands of Svalbard. Itinerary
Svalbard is situated at about 80 degrees north, so we schedule the expedition in accordance with prevailing weather and ice conditions. The map on this page shows the estimated route for this expedition. Even if it normally will be some changes in the planned itinerary this route cover the main areas we will visit. In July the drift ice edge can be situated near the Svalbard islands still. Weather and ice conditions will be what we plan the sailing rout according to, along with where to find wildlife.
Day 0 We always recommend to arrive Longyearbyen at least one day and night in advance.
Day 1 Departure from Longyearbyen throughout Isfjorden. Dependent on weather and ice conditions we sail towards Northeast or Southeast. Any direction will bring us into interesting areas for finding wildlife. Heading for the northern parts of Svalbard.
Day 2-14 Looking for wildlife in the pack ice. July is a great time to go as the more remote locations will be accessible and we still will have lots of ice. We will set course towards north and head for the drifting ice and follow the direction towards east. Most of our time will be spent in the pack ice as long as the weather is not extremely bad. We will look for wildlife like polar bears, seals, whales and also some birdlife this time of the year. We will plan stops visiting Walrus haul outs as well om some of the islands and in the fjords on our way out or when returning from the pack ice.
The route illustrated in the map on this page is just a estimate for where we will sail. It probably will be changed depending on the ice conditions.
Day 15 Leaving the ship after breakfast and prepare the travel home.
