Early Pack Ice expedition
Exploring the southern ice
Join us on an early spring expedition into one of Svalbard’s least-visited regions. We depart from Longyearbyen and sail south toward Hornsund, a spectacular fjord system known for its alpine scenery, steep mountains, and snow-covered landscapes.
From Hornsund, we continue east from the southern tip of Spitsbergen into one of Svalbard’s most important wildlife habitats. This remote area offers exceptional opportunities to experience Arctic wildlife in a dramatic and rarely visited setting.
The Pack Ice in the South
By early May, the midnight sun has returned to Svalbard, bringing constant daylight to the region. Temperatures may still be below freezing, and conditions can feel wintry, but the growing sunlight quickly transforms the landscape toward spring.
Clouds may soften the strength of the sunlight, but they also create striking patterns and photographic opportunities. Even in continuous daylight, we may still see the subtle colours of sunrise and sunset across the ice and snow.
Wildlife follows the movement of the ice, and the main focus of this expedition is to explore the southern pack ice and follow Arctic wildlife into these vast frozen areas.
- Explore early-season pack ice in southern Svalbard.
- Travel through one of the region’s key wildlife habitats.
- We will navigate outside 12 nautical Miles borders and are allowed close Polar Bear encounters.
- Search for wildlife in areas connected to one of Svalbard’s local polar bear populations.
- Experience a remote Arctic landscape shaped by drifting ice, light, and weather.
Please see the itinerary further down the page for the planned route and expedition details.
Exploring Remote Areas of Svalbard
Nature in the High Arctic is constantly changing. No two days in Svalbard are the same, and every season brings new ice conditions, wildlife encounters, and expedition possibilities.
With our strong ice-class vessel, Kvitungen, we can explore deeper into the pack ice than in previous seasons. Depending on the ice conditions, we will aim to reach remote areas of the Arctic Ocean around Svalbard and observe wildlife behaviour close to the ship.
Arctic Wildlife Tours is a Norwegian-owned company leading this expedition in a region we know well and care deeply about. Local knowledge and field experience are essential here, where guides must adapt continuously to weather, drifting ice, and wildlife movements throughout the day.
Accommodation and Expedition Ship
The expedition takes place aboard Kvitungen, a vessel built for polar exploration and navigation in heavy ice. Originally constructed for seal hunting in 1960, Kvitungen has the strongest possible ice class for a small vessel: 1A1 SEALER.
For the 2027 season, the ship has been refurbished with new cabins, a mess room, and a small lounge area is planned. The expedition is led by experienced guides and crew who speak excellent English and have extensive experience exploring Svalbard.

Itinerary
This photo tour and itinerary will be planned in accordance with prevailing weather and ice conditions. In May it will still be lot of fjord ice and the pack ice will be easy to reach almost in any direction. This limits the areas that is accessible, on the other hand the conditions with snow covered and frozen landscapes will be great experiences this time of the year.
Day 0 We always recommend to arrive Longyearbyen at least one day and night in advance.
Day 1 Departure from Longyearbyen through Isfjorden. Heading south into the drifting ice south of Svalbard. Onboard our new vessel with ice class 1A1 SEALER we are able to navigate these areas with heavy ice this time of the year. On the way south we visit the fjords of Bellsund and Hornsund. Beutiful areas this time of the year with great opportunities for wildlife encounters.
Day 2 We will do a stop in Hornsund and spend some hours during this day searching for wildlife and doring some work for great landscape pictures. Hornsund is a very alpine area, with the mountain "Hornsundtind" as one of the highlights there. At the end of the day we will continue towards east sailing around the South Cape of Spitsbergen.
Day 2-9 Most of these days will be used in the pack ice southeast of Svalbard. It is heavby ice this time of the year and we will have great opportunities for finding wildlife. We will sail nearby the island "Hopen" and follow the coastlines of "Edge island". Those areas are protected but we can operate in a surtain distance.
The amount of ice will decide where we can sail at the end. Weather situations will also interfere with our decisions. In worst case with really bad weather down south we might choose a route up north. This is unlikely but it is a 1% chance for it could happen.
Day 10 Leaving the ship after breakfast and prepare the travel home.
