M/S Kvitungen

Extreme high ice class ICE 5 - M/S Kvitungen

The times are changing and so are Arctic Wildlife Tours.

We are proud to present a brand new product where you can travel comfortably deep into the arctic pack ice, in small groups with like-minded wildlife photographers. Over the years that we have been photographing polar bears and walrus we have always had a great desire to spend as much time as we can in the floating pack ice, often far north of the Svalbard Islands. The limitations have always been those of the vessels strength, engine capacities, and how thick ice they can travel in but with our new partnering ship MS Kvitungen this will no longer be an issue.

The MS Kvitungen is originally a SEALER and has been used for fishing lately. Now we are working on using this in tourisme. We charter it this year to see how it works. We believe this ship will be something totally unique for beeing used in the pack-ice.

MS Kvitungen was constructed in Norway with the specific intent of travelling far into the pack ice on the east coast of Greenland; some of the most challenging waters in the world. Over her years of service she has been used for various fields of arctic logistics, and from 2025 she will sail in a cooperation with Arctic Wildlife Tours with a primary focus of pack ice expeditions.

With an engine capacity three times higher than most other ships in this category, and a ‘DNV ICE 5’ ice class corresponding to some of the most powerful ships in the arctic, this opens up a whole new horizon for Arctic Wildlife Tours and our photographers. Out in the international waters of the pack ice is where you find the real kingdom of the polar bear, and this is where we want to take you.

MS Kvitungen is specifically designed to sail in dense pack ice. Every detail is considered. Both rudder and propeller are reinforced and protected from moving ice and her hull is constructed as a real ice-breaker. But arctic expeditions is not all about technical details, it's about people. MS Kvitungen is a ship from Norway with a Norwegian crew. The captain and his officers all have decades of experience from operating ships in pack ice. Paired together with the experienced guides from Arctic Wildlife Tours they will be able to get you to the most remote areas of the Arctic Ocean – far away from any other ships.

The mess hall is a nice and cozy place to hang out between photography sessions. This is also where the chef will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner to keep us fueled for long cold days of scouting & photography.

Expect a warm and rich Norwegian cruising when you are travelling with us. Kvitungen is not your average ultra-luxurious cruise ship. She is a hardcore expedition vessel, perfectly adapted for wildlife photographers that are looking for a real adventure and to be able to be where the action is. The cabins on Kvitungen is not equipped with en suite bathrooms, but has several public washrooms. The largest and best shower will always be exclusive to the ladies, while the boys share the other two. There are also two single WC, in addition to the showers.

Ask us for a PDF presentation of the ship by sending us an email on contact@arcticwildlifetours.com

We hope you would like to try the M/S Kvitungen. We can guarantee this will be a adventure without comparision into the pack-ice!

Cabins onboard

The cabins onboard has only shared facilities but is quit spacious. The berths are upper and lower bunks but we will provide a ladder to climb up in the upper bunk. It is 6 similar double cabins onboard Kvitungen, 4 in the front of the ship and two in the aft. The standard is like onboard a Norwegian working ship. Kvitungen was origionally built as a SEALER and has also been used for fishing. Due to problems with our former ship M/S Origo we had to change to Kvitungen on short notice.

The good with this ship is that it is a real expedition ship with its ice capacity. No other ship on Svalbard is comparable with it. The crew will be experienced people used to be sailing in the drift ice.
