Terschelling
Terschelling - The Polar Ship
Terschelling Arctic Expedition Ship was built in the Netherlands in 1963, the ship was meticulously constructed to meet the rigorous standards set by the Lloyds Register for Ice Class 1 vessels. Named after the picturesque West Frisian Island, where it was stationed, the vessel was originally commissioned by the Dutch Coastguard to serve as a buoy layer and lightship tender in one of the world’s most treacherous bodies of water—the North Sea. This formidable sea was renowned for its violent storms and intricate currents, demanding a vessel of exceptional strength and seaworthiness.
During its time with the coastguard, Terschelling dutifully served for three decades, with no expense spared in its maintenance. After retiring from official service, the ship transitioned into private ownership and found a new role as a dive salvage vessel.
Throughout its tenure, Terschelling participated in several notable projects, two of which earned it widespread recognition. One such project involved the salvage of bullion from the Rooswijk, a Dutch East Indiaman that sank off the English coastline at Goodwin Sands in 1739. The ship carried coins destined for trade in Batavia, present-day Jakarta.
The second remarkable project centred around the recovery of artefacts from the Mary Rose, King Henry VIII’s cherished warship, which sank during a battle. Terschelling played a crucial role in raising various relics, including the anchor, which are now on display at the Mary Rose museum.
Now, under new ownership, Terschelling embarks on a new chapter as an Arctic Expedition Ship, where its seafaring capabilities, ice-class hull, and dependable engine will be harnessed to transport guests to remote, ice-laden regions of the world. The ship is undergoing a transformative process, with the construction of a spacious and cozy saloon on the deck, spanning approximately 70 square meters. This welcoming space is adorned with large 800x600mm windows, offering guests the opportunity to revel in the awe-inspiring sights of ice, mountains, and fjords while enjoying the warmth of the saloon
