Pack Ice expedition Svalbard
Join us for the Pack Ice north of Svalbard
We are going up in the pack ice during this trip and will stay there longer. New environmental regulations from 2025 has made it more restricted inside the Svalbard territorial border. In the drift ice we will be outside this area and international regulations will be valid there. With this ship we have the capacity to operate more and longer into the pack ice areas. We also spend some of the days by glaciers and in the fjords on this long cruise lasting 14 nights and 15 days.
Into the pack ice.
In Svalbard you find a multitide of different animals. The most famous of these is of course the polar bear. “The King of the Arctic”. The polar bears roam the frozen seas and rugged coastlines, while searching for seals and sustenance. Sometimes you can see them tending to their small cubs in this harsh, but yet rich, environment. Sometimes they wander along the shore, but their real home is out in the drifting pack ice. More than 60% of the population migrate into the pack ice during early summer.
Exclusive small ship expedition.
The Svalbard Archipelago is surrounded by the Arctic Ocean, and a short distance north, or east, of the islands we start entering what we call “the pack ice”. This is a magical environment in many ways. It is also the real home of the polar bears and other wildlife like seals, walruses and whales. This is where the bears can hunt seals in the summer.
What to expect.
We expect seeing all the different wildlife around Svalbard at this time of the year. Landscapes and scenery also gives outstanding possibilities for photographic opportunities. Itinerary
Svalbard is situated at about 80 degrees north, so we schedule the expedition in accordance with prevailing weather and ice conditions. The map on this page shows the estimated route for this expedition. Even if it normally will be some changes in the planned itinerary this route cover the main areas we will visit. In July the drift ice edge can be situated near the Svalbard islands still. Weather and ice conditions will be what we plan the sailing rout according to, along with where to find wildlife.
Day 0 We always recommend to arrive Longyearbyen at least one day and night in advance.
Day 1 Departure from Longyearbyen throughout Isfjorden. Dependent on weather and ice conditions we sail towards Northeast or Southeast. Any direction will bring us into interesting areas for finding wildlife. Heading for the northern parts of Svalbard.
Day 2-14 Looking for wildlife in the pack ice. July is a great time to go as the more remote locations will be accessible and we still will have lots of ice. We will set course towards north and head for the drifting ice and follow the direction towards east. Most of our time will be spent in the pack ice as long as the weather is not extremely bad. We will look for wildlife like polar bears, seals, whales and also some birdlife this time of the year. We will plan stops visiting Walrus haul outs as well om some of the islands and in the fjords on our way out or when returning from the pack ice.
The route illustrated in the map on this page is just a estimate for where we will sail. It probably will be changed depending on the ice conditions.
Day 15 Leaving the ship after breakfast and prepare the travel home.
