SVALBARD EXPEDITION JUNE 2018

A new photo and wildlife expedition into the ice around the islands of Svalbard.

We are chartering the ship MS Freya, a new spacious and strong ship, to do this photo expedition into the Svalbard wilderness. This is an early summer expedition and we expect there to be a lot of ice around Svalbard. This will give us possibilities to experience and to photograph the Arctic wildlife in its typical environment - which is ice. We will focus on searching in the drift ice for wildlife as Polar Bears, seals and birdlife. Around the Islands of Spitsbergen and Nordaustlandet we also will spend time in the Svalbard fjords looking for Arctic wildlife. We will visit Walrus colonies and do landings there. In June, it should be possible to find Walruses resting on drifting ice as well.

Travel Route

Itinerary

Svalbard is situated at about 80 North. We never know how the ice conditions and weather will be and we schedule the expedition in accordance with prevailing weather and ice conditions. The area that is covered by drifting ice and fjord ice is different from year to year.

Day 0 We always recommend to arrive Longyearbyen at least one day in advance. This is because flights can be delayed or cancelled. Sometimes baggage also is missing.

Day 1 Departure from Longyearbyen through Isfjorden.

Day 2-3 Western coast of Spitsbergen, visiting Kongsfjorden, Lilliehööksfjorden, Magdalenefjorden, Prins Karls Forland and other areas where we will have great landscape, glaciers and good chances for wildlife as Polar bear, Walrus and seals.

Day 4 North-western coast of Spitsbergen with Smeerenburgfjorden, Raudfjorden and Liefdefjorden, with great landscape and good chances for wildlife on the ice.

Day 5-8 Hinlopen Strait if it is possible because of the ice. Seven Islands north of Nordaustlandet.

Day 9 Sailing back to Isfjorden and arrive Longyearbyen late in the evening around 23:00.

Day 10 Leaving the ship after breakfast and prepare the travel home.
